SORT

Remove from the workplace all items that are not needed.
 - Sorting means leaving only the bare necessities
 - When in doubt, throw it away or “Red Tag” it

Decide what is needed, decide where it is needed, decide how much you need. Use Red Tags to make decisions on items.

SHINE

Remove sources of contamination and error.

A clean workplace highlights problems quickly. Often referred to as “Sweep” this stage introduces the concept of visual workplace – any item out of place is quickly detected, and rectified.

STANDARDISE

Set standards for inspections, cleaning, lubrication and other routine tasks.

An important factor in high performance teamwork is the establishment of standards. High standards ensure that the gains from the pervious 5S activities are locked in and do not slip over time.

The goal is to be “Tour Ready” at any time.
